Galactic disks as reaction-diffusion systems

چکیده

A model of a galactic disk is presented which extends the homogeneous one zone models by incorporating propagation of material and energy in the disk. For reasonable values of the parameters the homogeneous steady state is unstable to the development of inhomogeneities, leading to the development of spatial and temporal structure. At the linearized level a prediction for the length and time scales of the patterns is found. These instabilities arise for the same reason that pattern formation is seen in non-equilibrium chemical and biological systems, which is that the positive and negative feedback effects which govern the rates of the critical processes act over different distance scales, as in Turing’s reaction-diffusion models. This shows that patterns would form in the disk even in the absence of gravitational effects, density waves, rotation, shear and external perturbations. These nonlinear effects may thus explain the spiral structure seen in the star forming regions of isolated flocculent galaxies. ∗ [email protected]

Entropy production in diffusion-reaction systems: the reactive random Lorentz gas.

We report the study of a random Lorentz gas with a reaction of isomerization A<==>B between two colors of moving particles elastically bouncing on hard disks. The reaction occurs when the moving particles collide on catalytic disks, which constitute a fraction of all the disks. Under dilute-gas conditions, the reaction-diffusion process is ruled by two coupled Boltzmann-Lorentz equations for th...

Almost sure exponential stability of stochastic reaction diffusion systems with Markovian jump

A New Approach for Probing Circumbinary Disks

Circumbinary disks are considered to exist in a wide variety of astrophysical objects, e.g., young binary stars, protoplanetary systems, and massive binary black hole systems in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, there is no definite evidence for the circumbinary disk except for some in a few young binary star systems. In this Letter, we study possible oscillation modes in circumbinary dis...

A numerical treatment of a reaction-diffusion model of spatial pattern in the embryo

In this work the mathematical model of a spatial pattern in chemical and biological systems is investigated numerically. The proposed model considered as a nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation. A computational approach based on finite difference and RBF-collocation methods is conducted to solve the equation with respect to the appropriate initial and boundary conditions. The ability and robust...

The Kinematics of Galactic Stellar Disks

The disks of galaxies are primarily stellar systems, and fundamentally dynamical entities. Thus, to fully understand galactic disks, we must study their stellar kinematics as well as their morphologies. Observational techniques have now advanced to a point where quite detailed stellar-kinematic information can be extracted from spectral observations. This review presents three illustrative exam...
